Lars is Party Member in Aveyond 1: Rhen's Quest, and the first person to join Rhen's party.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Little is known about Lars's childhood. He lives with his mother, Rona, a wealthy slave-owner. Lars and his mother live in a large house in Ghalarah when Rona purchases Rhen as a slave. He is a cousin of the Empress Telin De'Baron and is proud of his wealth and status.

Lars is famous in Ghalarah for his affinity for sorcery. He had already been accepted into Shadwood Academy when he makes his first appearance, and aspires to become High Sorcerer.

Aveyond 1: Rhen's Quest[]

Lars volunteers to join Rhen in order to get the attention for himself, and because he does not believe a slave should undertake such an important quest.

Legacy[]

At the end of the game, Lars says he will return to Veldarah and become a teacher at Shadwood Academy. If the player chooses to go with him, Rhen and Lars become Instructors at Shadwood Academy, where they teach for several years. After a few years, they are raised to High Sword Singer and High Sorcerer.

A character named Lars VIII is mentioned in Aveyond 3-4: The Darkthrop Prophecy, presumably a descendent.

Personality[]

Initially, Lars is arrogant, cruel, and a bully. He and his friends constantly abuse Rhen and the other slaves in Ghalarah (including a small child) and try to make their lives miserable. When he and Rhen first embark on their journey, Lars vows that when he becomes High Sorcerer, he will make sure that no "slave trash" is allowed into Shadwood Academy ever again.

As the game progresses, Lars becomes more compassionate towards the lower classes, and expresses contrition for his past behavior. If the player chooses not to join the Elite Mage guild, Lars will condemn classism and elitism.

Relationships[]

Ghalarah[]

Lars often bullies the slaves of the town, causing them to fear and resent him. Even the slave-owning adults in the village think he takes his bullying too far. However, his mother seems to think of him as a lovely, gifted young boy.

Rhen[]

Lars' and Rhen's relationship started off as Master and Slave. He bullies Rhen and does not care if he kills her (as seen in Ghalarah when he used magic on her, breaking the slave bracelet on her wrist). He even goes as far as to change Rhen's name to Peta (the name of his friend's dog). As the game progresses the hate between the two of them turn into a somewhat less toxic acquaintanceship. They are seen discussing things without Lars insulting her. Later in the game Lars also shows concern for Rhen's safety (as seen when they first encounter the dragon), though the way he expresses it is very bossy. In Sedona, Lars apologizes to Rhen about how horrible he was to her in the past.

In Build C, Rhen has the option to return with Lars to Veldarah at the end of the game. Whether their relationship becomes romantic is left ambiguous.

Elini[]

When Elini first encounters Lars, he thinks that she wants him to join her growing group of husbands. She informs him that he is not her type, which embarasses and disturbs Lars, and he quickly insists that many women want to marry him. Throughout the quest, Elini and Lars are cordial to each other.

Dameon[]

Lars and Dameon do not see eye to eye and can be seen to argue in the manor. However, Lars argues with practically everyone, and Dameon seems to respect his confidence.

Lars finds Dameon's admiration of Rhen ridiculous and rolls his eyes whenever it is displayed.

Te'ijal[]

Lars seems to be afraid of Te'ijal; he threatens to fry her with magic in order to protect himself from being bitten.

Galahad[]

Lars and Galahad disagree on a number of things, most notably the existence of magic. Lars tries to convince Galahad of the existence of magic by hitting him with a spell.

Pirate John[]

Pirate John seems to enjoy teasing Lars, probably on account of his snobbishness. Lars refuses to talk to him.

Mad Marge[]

Lars refuses to talk to her.

Abilities[]

Lars is a powerful mage and able to learn a great number of spells. He starts with Shock and can be taught five other spells in the beginning. He can also learn spells from scrolls. When equipped with the Orb Staff, some spells are empowered, depending on the element of the orb attached to the staff. On the other side of the coin, spells that are opposite of the element of the orb will be degraded.

Equipment[]

Lars, as a typical mage, equips a staff to wield in battle. However, unlike any other mages in the party, he can equip a staff to which magical orbs can be attached. Spells' power can be increased and even decreased depending on the element of the orb attached.
